Episode 6 ends with Charlie alone in the corridor.
The strongest Dark Matter Season 2 Episode 9 theory is that Charlie could find a world where Max survived and decide he wants to stay. Daniela may be able to reach her son through their emotional connection, but finding him could lead to a disagreement over which life he wants.
Episode 8 gives that possibility more weight by revealing the history of Laurel’s refuge and the Jason now advising Charlie. Meanwhile, most of the situations left unresolved in Episode 7 remain in place: Ryan needs help for Amanda, Jason has another version of himself at the door, and Leighton’s pyramid still has practical limitations.
These eight theories carry those storylines forward using what Laurel’s episode adds. They are predictions for Episode 9, rather than confirmed outcomes.
Spoilers through Dark Matter Season 2 Episode 8.
Watch the full breakdown below, then keep reading for the evidence, the questions raised by Laurel’s story, and what they could mean going forward.
1. Will Charlie want to come home if he finds Max?
Charlie could resist going home if he finds a reality where his brother Max grew up. His search gives him an emotional goal that may conflict with Daniela’s effort to reunite their family.
The Jason at Laurel’s house understands that temptation. He encourages Charlie to see Max while warning him about the Box offering “infinite regret.” Once a traveler knows another version of a lost life exists, accepting the life they already have becomes harder.
For Charlie, leaving Max could feel like losing his brother again. Daniela would be asking him to walk away from someone he crossed worlds to find.
However, Max surviving would not automatically give Charlie the relationship he imagines. That Max could already have a Charlie in his life. Our Charlie would arrive with his own grief and expectations, while Max would have an entirely different history.
That is why I’m watching for a difficult choice after the reunion. Charlie could get the opportunity he wanted and discover that belonging in that world requires more than finding his brother alive.
The possibility of branching Charlies also remains open, but we still need evidence before claiming the series has switched the Charlie we are following. Rawteur’s guide to the Box, alternate worlds, and multiple Jasons explains why shared memories can make closely related variants difficult to distinguish.
2. Can Daniela find Charlie through their connection?
Daniela’s connection to Charlie gives her a plausible way to find him, especially after Episode 8 shows travelers returning to Laurel by thinking about her.
Amanda explains that she and Jason were focused on Laurel when they found their way back. Their experience supports the idea that a person associated with safety, help, or home can guide a journey.
That gives Daniela something to work with even without Jason’s experience. She knows her son, and her need to reach him provides a clear purpose.
Her fear could complicate that purpose. Daniela entered alone after leaving a note that Jason had not noticed when we last saw him. If her thoughts become dominated by the danger Charlie might be facing, those fears could affect the worlds she reaches.
There is also a difference between finding a Charlie and identifying the Charlie who left her. A familiar face and matching memories may establish a shared history without settling every question about later branching.
Rawteur’s earlier analysis of how Amanda and Ryan reached Jason’s world considers a similar possibility: travelers can have overlapping emotional destinations without consciously choosing the same location.
My prediction is that Daniela’s bond with Charlie can move her closer to him. Whether she arrives before he finds Max could determine how their reunion unfolds.
3. Will Jason join Leighton’s pyramid project?
Jason could be tempted to help Leighton because the pyramid presents a scientific problem he wants to solve. Jason2’s arrival creates a possible route into that project.
When we last followed our Jason, he was absorbed in his own work on the Box, including the possibility of a mobile version. His apparent breakthrough held his attention while his family’s situation continued to deteriorate.
Leighton has resources and a larger machine. Jason has ideas and an increasing investment in understanding the technology. Helping could appeal to him, particularly if he persuades himself that better control of the Box would help protect his family.
Episode 8 provides a useful comparison through Laurel’s Jason. That Jason also wants his family back, yet he stays while Amanda recovers. His decision shows where he places a limit on his search.
Our Jason may face a related decision about how much time and attention he gives the technology while Daniela and Charlie are missing.
The obstacle is Jason2. Our Jason has every reason to distrust the man who kidnapped him and took his place. Scientific curiosity alone may not be enough to make him listen.
I think recruitment is plausible, but any offer would need to address Jason’s immediate interests. Access to the pyramid might become more tempting if he believes it can help him recover his family.
For the background to Leighton’s operation, read why Leighton’s headquarters changed our understanding of his world.
4. Could Blair become an enemy of Leighton’s project?
Blair could move from refusing the project to actively opposing it if the people running the operation keep pressuring or monitoring her.
Her objection comes from experience. She understands how fear can affect a traveler’s destinations and how a journey can expose other worlds to danger. Seeing a larger machine gives her reasons for concern.
The surveillance order adds another source of conflict. As covered in Rawteur’s analysis of the blind spot in Leighton’s pyramid plan, Oluko tells Sandra to find Blair and keep her under observation after Leighton allows her to leave.
That distinction matters. Oluko’s actions raise questions about the operation’s leadership and whether its members agree on how to handle refusal.
Jason2 has already objected to the pressure placed on Blair. His objection could become more consequential if the surveillance escalates, although it does not establish that he is ready to abandon the pyramid himself.
Episode 8 also shows a version of Blair reaching Laurel. We should keep that history in mind without assuming every appearance of Blair belongs to one uninterrupted journey.
My theory is that Blair’s next move will depend partly on whether she is allowed to walk away. Following someone who wants no involvement can give them a reason to interfere.
5. Can Ryan find help for Amanda?
Ryan’s most immediate goal is likely to be finding treatment for Amanda. Bringing a cure back to the plague world remains a larger obligation, but Amanda first needs to survive.
Her unconsciousness leaves Ryan navigating without her active help. His determination to save her could give him a strong destination to focus on, while his fear could make that focus difficult to maintain.
Laurel’s house now looks like a possible refuge. Episode 8 establishes that Laurel can care for an injured traveler and that people have successfully returned to her home.
However, we are missing an important connection: we have not established that this Ryan knows Laurel. Her having met a Ryan does not mean the Ryan carrying Amanda remembers meeting her.
Laurel’s medical experience also would not automatically provide a cure for Amanda’s illness. Reaching the house could secure shelter and immediate care while leaving the larger medical problem unresolved.
I expect Ryan to seek help before anything else. Laurel is one possible destination, but a different world with appropriate medical resources could serve that purpose too.
6. Where will McNamara emerge from the Box?
McNamara could reach another Chicago by focusing on home, although his lack of training makes a specific destination difficult to predict.
Jason drugged him and abandoned him inside the Box without explaining how to navigate. We last saw McNamara walking through the corridor, and we do not know of an additional supply of ampoules available to him.
Familiar surroundings could offer temporary safety. They could also create another problem if McNamara reaches a world where another version of him already exists or where the people he knows have different histories.
His confusion and anger may influence that destination. He has information about Jason and the Box, but little understanding of what has happened to him.
Meanwhile, his disappearance could have consequences in the world he left. His sister has noticed the Velocity logo in the photographs, giving her a connection to pursue.
Jason may have removed the person questioning him while leaving someone else with a stronger reason to investigate. McNamara would not need to return for that investigation to become a problem.
7. Could Leighton’s pyramid strand travelers?
The pyramid’s operating limit creates a plausible risk for travelers, but it does not establish that anyone will become stranded.
Episode 7 identifies a power problem that limits operation to twenty minutes. The longer-lasting drug patch addresses a separate issue: how long a person can remain able to travel.
Progress on the patch therefore does not automatically resolve the machine’s power requirements. Each part needs to work within a plan that accounts for departure, travel, and return.
The precise consequences of a shutdown remain unresolved. We should avoid inventing a technical rule about what must happen to someone already inside the corridor.
The wider concern is whether Leighton expands use faster than his team understands the consequences. Previous journeys have already shown how travelers can carry dangers between worlds. A larger operation increases the number of decisions, destinations, and returning people that need to be managed.
There is a reasonable counterargument: Leighton’s team knows the operating limit and can restrict testing accordingly. Recognizing a limitation gives them an opportunity to prevent a failure.
I would become more concerned if success with the patch, or a breakthrough from Jason, encouraged Leighton to relax precautions before the other problems were resolved.
8. Will Laurel’s refuge bring everyone together?
Laurel’s home could become a meeting point for several storylines because Episode 8 establishes its history as a refuge for travelers. Charlie’s presence already connects it directly to the Dessen family’s search.
Daniela arriving would create a particularly complicated encounter. She could find her son alongside a version of her husband who built a relationship with Amanda and eventually stopped searching for his own family.
That Jason is also advising Charlie about the brother he wants to find. His experience could shape how Charlie responds when Daniela asks him to return.
Ryan and Amanda have an obvious need for refuge, but they still need a believable way to reach it. McNamara has even less established connection to Laurel.
Alex remains another unresolved detail in Laurel’s account. The name is worth remembering, but it does not yet establish an identity, a relationship, or an imminent arrival.
I think the house is positioned to connect some of these stories. There is less evidence that every separated character must arrive there in Episode 9.
Dark Matter Episode 9 theories FAQ
Who was the Jason at Laurel’s house?
Episode 8 identifies him as another Jason who traveled with Amanda and remained while she recovered. He has built a life that differs from the Jason Daniela left behind.
Does Daniela know where Charlie went?
Daniela is searching for Charlie, but she does not have a confirmed address or reliable route to him. Her connection to her son could guide her journey.
Has Charlie found Max?
The material leading into these Episode 9 theories establishes Charlie’s search for Max. It does not yet establish the outcome of their reunion or whether Charlie would be welcomed into that family.
Is Laurel treating the same Amanda who escaped with Ryan?
We should not assume that. Laurel’s history includes an injured Amanda, while Ryan’s current situation involves an unconscious Amanda after their escape from the plague world. Connecting those appearances requires evidence about their respective journeys.
Does the longer-lasting patch fix the pyramid?
No. Extending the drug’s effects addresses travel duration. The pyramid’s power demand remains a separate technical problem.
What I’m watching for in Episode 9
Charlie’s search creates the clearest immediate conflict: Daniela wants her son back, while Charlie wants access to the brother he lost. Finding one another may force them to confront those different goals.
Laurel’s Jason has already shown Charlie that a traveler can build another life. Whether Charlie wants to do the same could become the hardest part of bringing him home.
