What is Dark Matter Season 2 about?
According to Apple’s official synopsis, Season 2 begins with the Dessen family living in a world that finally appears safe. That stability ends when an unimaginable event forces them to run again.
Jason becomes increasingly obsessed with the Box, while Daniela’s growing paranoia threatens the family’s fragile new life. Elsewhere in the multiverse, Amanda and Ryan work together as they attempt to find their way home.
Apple has also confirmed that Blair is determined to stop Leighton as he pursues his plan to create a perfect world.
Season 2 therefore continues several stories left open by the first-season finale. Jason, Daniela and Charlie must deal with the consequences of escaping their world, while Amanda and Ryan are now in the same reality after arriving there through separate journeys.

Apple renewed the series in August 2024 and described the continuation as an expansion of the Dark Matter universe. A third-season renewal has not been announced as of August 23, 2026.
Is Dark Matter based on a book?
Yes. Dark Matter is based on Blake Crouch’s 2016 science-fiction novel of the same name. Crouch created the television adaptation and serves as its showrunner.
The first season adapted the novel’s central story about Jason Dessen being abducted by an alternate version of himself and attempting to return to his family. Season 2 continues the television story beyond the main events covered by the book.
What happened in Dark Matter Season 1?
Jason escaped the alternate reality created by Jason2 and reunited with Daniela and Charlie, but his decisions inside the Box produced numerous versions of him who also believed they belonged with the same family. Daniela ultimately chose the Jason viewers had followed, and the three entered the Box to find a new world while Amanda and Ryan encountered one another in the reality Amanda had selected.
