UPDATE 8/22/2026: Episode 8 provided new evidence about what Gus designed for Ed Harwood. Read the complete Episode 8 breakdown here
Silo Season 3 Episode 7 does not reveal exactly what Knox’s father built for Ed Harwood, but the strongest theory is an underground drilling or transportation system. Gus had access to diamond drill bits, hidden mine routes and missing Supply equipment, while Ed considered the invention valuable enough to fake Gus’s death and hide another body in his grave.
The project could explain the stolen grow lights, Glenda’s impossible movement between Mining and Supply and the long-standing rule preventing miners from digging more than 200 feet outward. A direct tunnel to Silo 17 remains possible, but it is not confirmed.
This article contains spoilers through Silo Season 3 Episode 7.
Watch the full Hidden Details breakdown below, then keep reading for the evidence connecting Gus, Ed Harwood, the missing supplies and Daniel’s original silo drill.
What Did Knox’s Father Build for Ed Harwood?
Gus most likely designed a compact horizontal drill, underground transport system or hidden route that could operate beyond the silo’s cameras. Episode 7 confirms that he built something for Ed Harwood, but it withholds the design itself.
The surrounding clues narrow the possibilities. Diamond drill bits have moved through the black market. Critical Supply is missing decades of grow-light bulbs and other equipment. Glenda appears near Mining and reaches Supply roughly ten minutes later, a journey that should be impossible by the central staircase.
One hidden passage could explain Glenda’s speed. It would not fully explain the amount of equipment missing or why Gus needed his death erased from the official record. Whatever he created appears to support a larger operation rather than one shortcut.
The most likely answer is therefore infrastructure: a machine or route capable of expanding the miners’ hidden world without disturbing the visible silo.
Is Knox’s Father Gus Still Alive?
Yes, Episode 7 reveals that Gus’s recorded death was faked. Knox learns that his father did not die when the silo’s records claim he did.
According to the story Knox receives, Gus designed something for Ed Harwood. Ed repaid him by arranging the false death and placing another dead man in Gus’s grave. That means the official burial record cannot be trusted and Gus may have continued working in secret after disappearing from public life.
The revelation gives Knox’s investigation a different purpose. He is no longer trying to understand how his father died. He is trying to find where Gus went, who helped him disappear and what project required him to leave his identity behind.
Ed Harwood’s involvement also connects the mystery to Billings and Hank’s investigation. Ed sits near the intersection of the false death record, Orla’s conflict and the network moving through areas the cameras fail to explain. That does not prove Ed or Glenda killed Orla, but it suggests the investigations may be uncovering different parts of the same hidden operation.
Who Is Ed Harwood in Silo?
Ed Harwood controls the concealed elevator and hidden supply operation operating outside Silo 18’s normal transportation system. He says the operation began during the rebellion as a way to protect irreplaceable supplies from residents who might empty Critical Supply during the unrest.
Harwood is also the man who arranged Gus’s false death. After Gus designed a private transportation system for him, Harwood gave Gus a new identity and placed another man’s body in his grave. Episode 8 strongly suggests that Gus’s design became the hidden elevator and access route connecting Harwood’s operation to Supply.
When Knox, Billings and Hank use Gus’s recreated design to find him, Harwood identifies Mike Davidson as Orla’s killer. However, his explanation does not resolve where the missing lightbulbs and Day One computers were taken, whether he ordered Orla’s murder or how extensive his hidden network really is.

Why the Missing Drill Bits and Grow Lights Matter
The missing drill bits and grow lights indicate a project designed to continue for years underground. They are difficult to explain as ordinary theft because their usefulness depends on sustained access to a hidden space.
Diamond drill bits can cut the rock surrounding the silo. Grow lights can support food production or human habitation where natural light is impossible. Large quantities of replacement bulbs imply preparation for long-term maintenance rather than one brief excavation.
Together, the supplies support three main possibilities:
- Gus built a tunnel or drilling system extending beyond the known mines.
- The equipment supports a hidden population living outside monitored levels.
- The miners reached another silo or underground facility and have been maintaining a route between them.
The third possibility would explain why so much material disappeared without creating a visible crisis inside Silo 18. The supplies may not be stored nearby. They may already be serving another location.
Does Glenda Use the Route Gus Built?
Glenda may be using Gus’s hidden route, but Episode 7 does not explicitly connect her to his project.
Surveillance places Glenda near the mines and then in Supply approximately ten minutes later. The main stairs should make that journey impossible. Missing camera coverage prevents Billings from reconstructing the route, which suggests Glenda knows a way through Silo 18 that Judicial cannot monitor.
That route could be a service passage, lift or tunnel created by Gus. If it connects Mining, Supply and other restricted areas, it would allow a network to move people and stolen equipment without relying on the central staircase.
Glenda’s movement also reframes Orla’s discovery. Orla noticed the Supply thefts and was killed inside a sealed mine tunnel. The route used to move the missing material may be the same network she was approaching before her death.
The evidence supports a connection. It does not identify Glenda, Ed or Gus as Orla’s killer.
Did Gus Build a Tunnel to Another Silo?
A tunnel to another silo is possible, but no direct connection has been confirmed. The miners were prohibited from digging more than 200 feet outward, and most residents only recently learned that other silos existed.
That rule may exist specifically to prevent underground contact. If Gus discovered why outward drilling was forbidden, he could have continued the work in secret with Ed Harwood’s protection.
The missing equipment makes a direct Silo 17 tunnel less likely than a broader network. Juliette’s group cannot begin drilling at night and reach Silo 17 by dawn. Any route useful to the present story must have existed before her mission started.
It also does not need to end at Silo 17. Gus may have reached another neighboring silo, an abandoned facility or a hidden population beneath the monitored levels. Travelers could potentially enter that location underground, climb to its airlock and cross the surface to Silo 17 while avoiding the systems controlled from Silo 18.
That theory expands the secret Silo 17 mission Juliette was preparing without requiring Gus to have known her specific destination.
How Daniel’s Giant Drill Connects to Gus
Episode 7 gives the Gus theory a parallel in the Before Times. Daniel and Helen are taken to Atlanta, where they fly over the adjoining parcels assembled for the silo project and see an enormous underground drill at work.
Daniel designed technology capable of excavating underground without disturbing the surface above. That is exactly the type of capability a hidden operation inside Silo 18 would need. A smaller descendant of Daniel’s design could expand beyond the known mine while keeping the activity invisible to residents and cameras.
The episode does not confirm that Gus found Daniel’s plans or copied the original machine. The connection is thematic and technological rather than proven. Both storylines focus on engineers using underground machinery to create enormous hidden spaces while the people above remain unaware.
If Gus accessed a Day One computer or preserved technical record, he may have rediscovered part of the construction technology used to create the silos. That would connect the past and present timelines through engineering instead of ancestry.
Why Would Ed Harwood Fake Gus’s Death?
Ed Harwood would fake Gus’s death to remove him from the official population and protect the secret project from Judicial surveillance. A living resident has work assignments, movement records, family connections and an identity that can be tracked. A dead resident can disappear into the mines without producing the same questions.
The substituted body makes the deception more serious than altering one file. Someone had access to a corpse, burial procedures and the authority or network required to place the wrong person in Gus’s grave.
That suggests organization. Ed was not simply helping a friend hide for a few days. He was helping Gus leave his recorded life permanently.
The cost also implies that Gus’s design threatened a central rule of the silo. A harmless tool would not require a false burial. A route beyond the cameras, a machine capable of violating the 200-foot restriction or contact with another population would.
What This Changes Going Forward
What Episode 7 established: Gus designed something for Ed Harwood, his death was faked and another body was buried under his name. Glenda’s travel time, the missing camera footage and the stolen Supply equipment remain unexplained.
What the evidence suggests: Gus built infrastructure supporting a hidden underground network. The strongest possibilities are a compact drill, concealed transport route or system connecting Silo 18 to another protected space.
Knox may be about to discover that Mechanical’s current rebellion is not the first attempt to move beyond the silo’s imposed limits. His father and Ed may have been building an alternative for years before Juliette returned from Silo 17.
Knox’s Father and Ed Harwood FAQ
Who is Knox’s father in Silo?
Knox’s father is Gus, a miner or engineer connected to diamond drill bits and a secret design created for Ed Harwood.
Is Gus dead in Silo?
No. Episode 7 reveals that Gus’s death was faked and another man was buried under his name.
Who is Ed Harwood?
Ed Harwood controls a hidden elevator and supply operation inside Silo 18. He arranged Gus’s false death after Gus designed the concealed transportation system that allowed Harwood’s group to move people and inventory without using the public stairs.
Is there a tunnel between Silo 18 and Silo 17?
No direct tunnel has been confirmed. The missing drills, grow lights, hidden routes and 200-foot mining restriction support a tunnel theory, but its destination remains unknown.
Did Glenda kill Orla?
The episode does not prove that Glenda killed Orla. Her unexplained movement connects her to a hidden route, but movement evidence alone does not establish responsibility for the murder.
Final Takeaway
Gus most likely built an underground drilling or transportation system for Ed Harwood. The project explains why Ed needed Gus officially dead, why long-term equipment vanished from Supply and how Glenda may be moving through Silo 18 without appearing on the expected cameras.
The exact design remains hidden. The scale of the cover-up suggests it could expose something larger than one passage—possibly another population, another silo or a route the Voice does not control.
